With a baby on the way, ’s Devin Kirk and his husband searched all of Chicago for a new home — only to find it right where they had started.
Devin Kirk and Chad Idol with their son, Harry, in the living room.
Kirk hand-painted the foyer’s walls in Farrow & Ball’s Stone Blue and Hague Blue and California Paints’ European Gray. Rug, Serena & Lily.
The dining room’s table is from Chicago-based Jayson Home, where Kirk is vice president of merchandising. The rug, reportedly hailing from a castle in England, was purchased at a flea market there. The chairs are also Jayson Home, with custom cushions made from vintage grain sacks from the Cloth Shop in London. Curtains, RH, Restoration Hardware.
While beautiful, Kirk knew this living room wouldn't work with a toddler. The easy-to-stain fabric sofas were the first to go.
"We're collectors," says Kirk. "I do so much traveling for work and always come home with something." In the living room, collections are displayed on Ikea shelves framed by mirrored walls. The Jayson Home sofa is in a Sunbrella fabric.
Kirk turned one corner of the barrel-vaulted dining room into a family hangout area where they relax with takeout and Netflix.
“I have a big cutting board that I put on the ottoman when we eat here,” he says. The Lee Industries for Jayson Home ottoman is in a JB Martin velvet. The ceiling is painted in Stardust by Benjamin Moore.
The sofa, covered in marbleized fabric, is a showstopper. Even better, the fabric hides pretty much anything.
With a baby on the way, Kirk turned their television den into a nursery. But he felt that their home wouldn't be complete without a cozy den, so he added the family hangout space to their dining area.
In the nursery, black-and-white-striped walls create a visual link with the rest of the house. Bedding, Land of Nod. The mobile is from Paris.
In the master bedroom, black walls disguise ductwork. Window shades, Smith & Noble. The bed is topped with linens by Pine Cone Hill and striped pillows by Jayson Home.
