Earlier this year, writer Daryl Austin wrote an opinion column for , in which he questioned the parenting capabilities of Chip and Joanna Gaines. He said that the HGTV stars were so busy with their tv show, Fixer Upper, and their other business ventures, like Joanna's cookbook, that they couldn't possibly have enough time to put their kids first.
"No matter how rich and famous, we are all limited by the same 24 hours in a day. You cannot do all they’ve done (or even a fraction of it) and still have any real time left over for family," Austin wrote. "Frankly, I wonder where they even find the time to brush their teeth, let alone spend quality, one-on-one time with each child daily."
Chip later responded to Austin with a strongly-worded response on Twitter. "I don’t know Daryl, and he clearly doesn’t know me. But for the record: If there is ever a need with my family (first), I’ll shut this circus down so fast it will make your head spin."
About a month later, the writer apologized to the couple in a follow-up article on , saying he regretted his words. "I don't know them personally, but I suspect they really are terrific parents. I've never said or thought otherwise," he wrote. "And just because Chip Gaines chooses to spend his time differently than I do doesn't make him any less of a father."
This seemed to be the end of the drama, and Austin has held out an olive branch to the couple, who recently welcomed their fifth child. As reports, the writer reached out to the family directly and asked for forgiveness.
A representative for the Gaineses replied to Austin, letting him know that everything was all good, and Austin says it’s made him feel a lot better. "I already respected them a lot, despite some concerns I addressed in that article, but now I respect them even more," he said.
