during the month of October has to be on your bucket list if you consider yourself a Halloween person. Not only is it an excuse to visit a new place and see upstate New York in the fall (hello, foliage), but there's also an insane amount of cool things to see and do in the town that Washington Irving made the absolute most infamous setting for a ghost story. From hay rides to a cemetery to maybe spotting the headless horseman, this is your ultimate Sleepy Hollow bucket list.
1. The Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze
If you know nothing else about Sleepy Hollow, you definitely know about . It's one of the biggest Halloween events in the entire country thanks to 7,000 carved jack o'lanterns turning the Van Cortlandt Manor into what we can only describe as a Tim Burton movie come to life. It lasts from September 28-November 24.
2. Horseman's Hollow
Horror fans, listen up. This period haunt brings the legend of Sleepy Hollow to life, turning the historic Philipsburg Manor into a village ruled by the Headless Horseman. It's literally terrifying, so if getting scared sh*tless (...or headless) isn't your thing, stay away. You can visit October 5-7, 12-14, 19-21, or 25-31.
3. Irving's 'Legend'
You can't go to Sleepy Hollow without hearing the legend told at least once. This dramatic performance takes place in the candlelit Old Dutch Church, and it's guaranteed to be unlike any version of the story you've ever heard before. Check it out on October 5-7, 12-14, 19-21, and 25-31.
4. Sleepy Hollow Cemetary
William Rockefeller, Washington Irving, Andrew Carnegie, and Leona Helmsley are all laid to rest in this historic cemetery. You can take a guided tour during the day, or see it lit by lanterns at night.
5. Headless Horseman Statue
The 18-foot high sculpture on a small grass island in the middle of Route 9 shows the horseman chasing Ichabod Crane on horseback.
6. Haunted Hay Ride
If you don't go on a hay ride, is it even Halloween!? This one starts downtown, then makes its way into the woods for a spooktacular journey you'll never forget. Check it out October 5-7, 12-14, 19-21, and 25-31.
