Rock and roller–turned–Portland, Oregon, decorator taught himself the classic design rules so he could break them — when he feels like it.
Shortly after his indie punk band returned from a tour of the U.S. and U.K., a lightbulb flashed for the bassist. "I was spending all my free time and money sprucing up my apartment instead of looking for a job," he recalls.
Humphrey threw himself into studying interior design, eventually becoming a partner at Los Angeles's Burnham Design. Last year, the 37-year-old opened his own firm in Portland, Oregon, where he specializes in lively, layered family homes for executives at Nike and Intel. It's all true to his rock roots: "Style is about knowing who you are and what you want to say — and not giving a damn."
