If you've always dreamed of setting up the perfect little chicken coop in your backyard and naming your adorable first pair of hens Thelma and Louise (okay, I've obviously thought about this) but haven't got a clue where to start, you're in luck. A chicken-keeping class actually exists, and it's being held in Austin, Texas this month for free.
Keeping chickens isn't just a cool way to get your breakfast omelette each morning—doing so can also positively impact the environment around you, especially when it comes to composting. This is actually why the city of Austin is holding these classes for free, to promote their Home Composting Rebate Program. Chickens and composting go hand-in-hand—the little hens can eat your old food scraps so none go to waste.
The Free Chicken Keeping Class will be held on three dates: June 8, July 6 and August 25 at 10 a.m. at Callahan's General Store, located at 501 South Highway 183 in Austin, Texas.

If Austin's a little too far out of the way to pursue your dreams of a backyard chicken coop, there's always How to Raise Chickens or The Beginner's Guide to Raising Chickens. Don't give up on the dream!
