Asscher cut stones have had a resurgence in popularity recently, but they are still far less common than round, cushion and emerald cut diamonds. The Asscher cut was designed in 1902 by Joseph Asscher, the owner of the Netherlands' Royal Asscher Diamond Company, and its geometric shape became popular in the 1920s.

The most famous Asscher cut diamond is the Krupp Diamond, which Richard Burton bought for Elizabeth Taylor in 1968. The actress wore it as a ring, and the 33.19-carat stone was sold by Taylor's estate in 2011 for $8.8 million.
