English actress Olivia Colman has joined the cast of The Crown for . Netflix has confirmed to Town & Country that the 43-year-old Broadchurch star will replace in the role of Queen Elizabeth II on the popular series about the royal family.
With the show covering approximately a decade of the Queen's life per season, the characters age faster than the actors who play them and creator Peter Morgan has opted to completely recast the show with slightly older actors every two seasons, rather than rely on age makeup and prosthetics.
"I feel that when we reach 1963-64 we've gone as far as we can go with Claire Foy without having to do silly things in terms of makeup to make her look older," Morgan said about the decision. "She can't help the fact she's as young as she is."
Foy, who let it slip earlier this fall that she knew who would be replacing her, is a fan of Colman, and was excited to hear she was stepping into Elizabeth's shoes. "I know who's doing it and I'm not telling you," during a press conference for her . "It's really exciting and great and amazing!"
Other information about the new cast has yet to be released.
