If you thought the only kinds of "pets" that are allowed to be cute and cuddly are hamsters, guinea pigs, cats, and dogs, you've been sadly mistaken. has introduced to us the Next Big Thing in the plant world that doubles as a fuzzy new friend—without all the hassle—and it'll surely blow your mind.
Called "the next pet rock," Marimo Moss Balls are the most exciting trend to hit the plant scene since living walls became a thing—which, are still admittedly super cool. These fuzzy balls are actually filamentous algae, meaning that they don't need a ton of light to survive and they live in water. Sooo they're kind of like fish that need way less attention (score!).
You can purchase a moss ball starter kit from The Sill that includes a 6-inch glass bowl and two small-sized marimo balls, or you could add a few to an already existing clear container of your choosing or even a freshwater aquarium.
If Marimo balls are put into aquariums, it's actually beneficial to the environment—they act as a natural filter and absorb toxic nitrates from the water. The water should just be switched out every two weeks and stay at room temperature to keep the balls at their best.
Also, make sure to keep the balls out of direct sunlight—they may begin to turn brown if they overheat or are in a brightly lit space. Other than that, sit back, relax, and enjoy your new "pet."
