For the most part, onscreen portrayals of Zelda Fitzgerald are usually filtered through the eyes of the men around her. But in Amazon's new original series, Z: The Beginning of Everything, Zelda (Christina Ricci) is in charge of the story — even if her husband, the great F. Scott Fitzgerald (David Hoflin), is lifting her words for his own work. A fictionalized account of the couple's turbulent marriage, Z will chronicle their relationship from the very beginning — a chance meeting at a party in Montgomery, Alabama — straight through to Zelda's death in a hospital fire 30 years later.
The first trailer, which dropped today, shows Zelda and Scott enjoying the riches of his literary fame while striving to maintain their posh, party-heavy lifestyle. "He basically married the heroine of his stories," one observer remarks as they dance their way through New York's speakeasies. This, of course, is true — Zelda is widely regarded as the inspiration for The Great Gatsby's Daisy Buchanan, and one scene in the trailer shows her reproaching him for using her words in a story. Scott and Zelda were as famous for their fights as their glamour, and his mining of her life for material for his stories looks to be a major plot point of the show.
It's worth noting that Amazon is promoting this as a Season 1 trailer, indicating there will be more than one season of the series. Meanwhile, and are also working on their own versions of films about Zelda, so prepare to become very acquainted with the Jazz Age in the coming months.
Z: The Beginning of Everything will stream on Amazon starting Friday, January 27, 2017.
