Barbara King: One of your dogs blends with the throw, the other matches the ottomans, and your clothes and hair harmonize with the whole room.
Rita Hazan: Black, white, gold, neutral — that's the palette that makes me comfortable. Nate Berkus was my decorator. We met on The Oprah Winfrey Show — he did home makeovers, I did hair makeovers — and he said, 'I know what you like. We're going to do your apartment to look like how you dress.'
Dare I ask if you chose dogs that complement your decor?
Ha, no! Señor and Chico are Havanese, good house dogs that are friendly and hypo allergenic. But also, of course, beautiful.
Beauty is very important to you.
It's always on my mind. I have a beauty salon on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan and a line of hair products.
And you're the colorist for lots of celebrities.
Yes. Beyoncé, Katy Perry, Jennifer Lopez, Jessica Simpson, Britney Spears, Michelle Williams….
I can imagine any one of them happy with a glamorous bedroom like this.
You can? That's great. I see it as sophisticated and clean, but I guess it does have an understated glamour. I don't like over-the-top anything. Everything should look beautiful in a natural, effortless way.
Any beauty products on your bedside table?
There's Frédéric Malle Carnal Flower Body Butter, L'Occitane Shea Butter Body Lotion, and Johnson's Baby Lotion. Plus some beauty-related books and magazines. I just started The Body Book by Cameron Diaz.
What's the most important thing for you to have in a bedroom?
Good energy. I like an atmosphere that's bright and open and warm. I even like the temperature to be warm, about 80 degrees. Beds have to be plush: I have a pillow-top mattress and soft sheets that my housekeeper irons and changes every two days. There's nothing like getting into a fresh, crisp bed.
Do you spend much time in it?
I don't need a lot of sleep; I'm a night owl. I'm up until 2:30 a.m., awake by 6:30 a.m.
What's the very best thing of all?
That it's mine. I didn't grow up with money, and I worked hard to afford all these luxurious things. They're nice to have and I'm grateful for them, but I never forget that in the end, they're only things.
