Amber Lewis is proving that a rose — or rather, bergamot and jasmine — by any other name would smell just as un-freaking-believable. The is known for her effortlessly cool California aesthetic, and now, she's taking that laid-back approach to candles, with the launch of her first two scents. As much as she carefully considered every detail of the line — because, as anyone who's tried a "no-makeup makeup" look can attest, effortless does take effort — when it came time to name her creations, she didn't go literal. Or Yankee Candle-twee. Or navel-gazingly abstract.
What's the story behind the name of her first scent, Nunya, a citrusy-floral mix of bergamot and jasmine? "None of your business…Kidding!" Amber joked. Nunya came to life by way of me being the total goof that I am… so, nunya business. Get it?"

Her other scent, 1977, is basically a memory in a bottle. It's named after the year her husband — and business partner — was born. And, at least if you asked her other half, it's after the greatest year for music in the history of the world. Apparently, that year (or, okay, maybe Amber's husband) smells like a woodsy, lavender-sage scent.

Coming up with these scents wasn't a matter of partnering with a company and slapping her name on the label. First off, there is no label — because these are meant to be displayed on your coffee table or mantel, not relegated to whatever musky corner needs freshening up. And second, largely, because Amber's devoted the past year to a trial-and-error process of vetting the scents and the vessels they'd go in.
"There are so many candles out there that you just burn and toss. I really wanted to create something that was not only beautiful but could become a fixture in your home long after the wax was gone," Amber wrote via email. "I use a lot of vintage ceramics as decor in the homes I design and in my own home, so I wanted to let everyone have a small piece of my vibe in their own homes!"
Each 8-ounce candle is poured into a ceramic container that's inspired by the vintage ceramics Amber's been collecting for years. Oh, and when you're ready to light a match, you can strike it directly against the container's base. But you also don't have to worry about that surface scratching up your table. Amber's thought of that, too: Each $68 candle comes with a leather coaster.
Both scents are sold at Shoppe Amber Interiors (with locations in Calabasas and the Pacific Palisades), and on , retailing for $68 apiece. And if you like what you smell, well, that's only the beginning. Amber plans on extending her Essentials line, but she isn't ready to reveal those details just yet.
"Just know that it’s going to smell very, very, very good," she swore. "It’s going to be worth the wait, I promise!"
