"On October 3rd, he asked me what day it is," may not be the most quotable line from Mean Girls, but it's obviously up there, because it's essentially become an annual reminder of the teen flick's brilliance. While everybody else wants to reference that line—and how Aaron Samuels's hair looks sexy when it's pushed back, and every other quip from the movie about outcasts getting revenge on the cruelest popular girls in school—I want to talk about something more important. Something we've been brushing over for too many years. We need to talk about the most underrated part of the entire movie.
"This is the fertility vase of the Ndebele tribe. Does that mean anything to you?" is the line we should be talking about right now. It's the line protagonist Cady Heron's mom asks her, when she realizes her daughter (ahem, Lindsay Lohan) stashed it in a cabinet so her friends wouldn't break it. Like Cady, the vase meant nothing to me for years. But now that I'm an adult, I have an apartment that needs to be decorated. Finally, I see that the fertility vase of the Ndebele tribe was not only valuable, but also an eye-catching piece that could bring any room together.
In case you need a refresher, the vase is tall and cylindrical, and appears to be made of clay. It's painted in a black-and-white checkered pattern. Checks, plaid, and gingham are all timeless patterns, but they've been especially popular as little flourishes and accents over the past few years. That alone could put the fertility vase right at the top of every must-have list. Beyond that, the color combination of black and white is classic. The crisp, clean look is a go-to for interior designers. Lastly, the size and shape make the vase versatile; it's big enough to stand alone on the floor, but not too big that it can't sit on a table or mantel, either.
Maybe I'm crazy. Maybe I'm trying to make fetch happen. But I really think we've been sleeping on the fertility vase of the Ndebele tribe. If you agree, I have good news: You may not be able to get your hands on the exact pot from the movie, but you can definitely steal the look. Here are a few stylish options to get you started on your search.
